How to AI-Grade Handwritten Math and Science Worksheets (With Partial Credit)
A guide for math and science teachers: grade handwritten work, multi-step problems and partial credit with AI, while you keep the final say on every score.
Why math and science still happen on paper
Online quizzes make it easy for students to look up answers, and multiple-choice questions don't show where a student went wrong. Paper shows the work.
The cost is time: grading a stack of multi-step problems by hand can take hours every week.
The hard part: steps and partial credit
Math and science answers include fractions, exponents, units, diagrams and crossed-out work. And you rarely grade only right or wrong — a correct setup with a sign error still earns points.
No Red Pen reads the handwritten work on each page and compares it to your answer key or rubric, awarding partial credit by the criteria and point values you set.
1. Set up your key or rubric
Type your answers, upload a photo of your filled-in key, or upload a blank copy and let No Red Pen draft a key for you to check.
For multi-step problems, add rubric criteria such as "1 point for setting up the equation, 1 point for the correct answer with units."
2. Scan the whole stack
Run the papers through your school copier as one PDF, or take photos with your phone. Papers are matched to students on your roster and sorted into the right class.
3. Review, don't grade
Each paper comes back scored with notes. Papers the AI is less sure about are flagged so you check those first. Click any question to change the points or the feedback.
If your key had a mistake, fix the answer once and apply it to every paper. If a question was flawed, drop it for the whole class and the remaining questions share its points.
4. Send scores and hand back corrections
Sync approved scores to Canvas or Google Classroom, or download a grades file. Print correction worksheets showing only the questions each student missed.
Not just worksheets on paper
The same steps work for digital work: upload student PDFs exported from your learning platform. Written explanations, lab conclusions and short answers are graded against your rubric too.
Can it read fractions and negative signs?
It reads most student handwriting, including math notation. When it can't tell what a student wrote, it flags the question for you instead of guessing silently.
What about student privacy?
Students don't need accounts or devices. Scanned work is sent to our AI service only to grade your assignment, not to train public AI models, and you can delete papers anytime. See the privacy policy for details.
